A downloadable game for Windows, Linux, and Android

Primitive is a free, open-source voxel survival and crafting game about starting with nothing — from the Stone Age to iron.

You wake in a vast procedural world with empty hands. Break a rock to get a sharp edge, knap flint, light a fire, and work your way up through clay, copper, bronze and iron. Every journey is different: forests, plains, hills, lakes, caves and rock strata — and the ore is in the hills rather than under your feet.

Inspired by TerraFirmaCraft: every step is a reason to go somewhere, not a number going up.

  Explore a Living World

  • Endless procedural terrain — hills, steppe, forest, rivers that run to the sea
  • Biomes with their own weather — meadow, forest, steppe, downs, savanna, marsh, desert, mountains, coast
  • Dynamic weather — rain, snow, wind, thunderstorms with lightning, and forest fires that spread
  • Day and night, moons and seasons — a full year you live through
  • Wildlife with senses — herds, packs, young that follow their mother
  • Underground — caves, rock strata, dripstone, and ore where geology puts it

  Start in the Stone Age

Begin with primitive tools and limited resources. Gather, hunt, build a shelter, and learn how to survive in an unforgiving world.

The ages, and what each one asks of you

  • Stone — pebbles, knapped flint, a firepit of sticks and a log
  • Clay — a pit kiln, pots, moulds and a roof over your head
  • Copper — a walk into the hills, where the ore is
  • Bronze — tin is rare and far away: an expedition, or a trade
  • Iron — a bloomery, a charcoal pit and a great deal of work

  Realistic Survival

  • Hunger and thirst, and a diet that has to be varied
  • Temperature and exposure — wet clothes, cold nights, heat, smoke, clean water
  • Fatigue and how a tired, loaded, injured body moves
  • Wounds — bleeding, broken bones, dressings and slow healing
  • Going down before you die — you fall, you crawl, and there are seconds for someone to save you
  • Winter you prepare for in summer — stored food, firewood, hay for the animals
  • Material processing — leather drying on a rack, pottery, charcoal, smelting, forging on an anvil
  • Tools that wear — quality, edges that dull, whetstones that bring them back
  • Clothing and equipment — wool is warmest and useless in rain

  Build and Create

Build anything from a lean-to to a settlement. Lay walls a layer at a time and roof them, floor them and furnish them.

  • Methods — handfuls of cob, wattle and daub, timber, stone laid in mortar
  • Rooms — doors, roofs, beds, chests, hearths, workshops, a cellar for the food
  • A house you feel — a draught or a hole in the roof is a cold night

  Wildlife

The world is inhabited by animals that live in it rather than stand in it. Behaviour, senses and reactions make an encounter something you read rather than something you memorise.

  • Keep livestock — tame, pen, feed, shear, milk
  • Ride — a horse is broken in, saddled and packed
  • Hunt and fish — tracks, a bow, a rod, bait and a float
  • Take honey from a wild hive, and pay for it
  • Fear the dark — after nightfall wolves come to the edge of your firelight

  A World That Feels Natural

Primitive focuses on a world that is coherent rather than a collection of blocks. Terrain, vegetation, animals, weather, temperature and resources work on each other, so a place has reasons for being what it is.

  Multiplayer

Explore the world together. Build settlements, cooperate, trade at a stall, go into dangerous country, or simply survive side by side.

The same authoritative server runs your singleplayer world and your server with friends, so nothing plays differently when somebody joins.

  Performance

Primitive is designed with performance in mind. The game uses an optimized voxel engine capable of generating and rendering large procedural worlds while maintaining high frame rates — written in Rust with no game engine underneath, so the renderer, mesher, lighting, physics, sound and world generator are all part of the project.

  • Optimized voxel rendering — 187 fps at 1080p on a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
  • Procedural world generation on background threads
  • Efficient chunk management — an empty section of a chunk is one value, a mixed one is a palette
  • Multiplayer support
  • Low hardware requirements

Minimum

OS64-bit Windows or Linux — and Android 8+
Processorx86-64, 2 cores (4 recommended)
GraphicsVulkan 1.1 or Direct3D 12; 1 GB VRAM

  Open Source

Primitive is an open-source project. The source code is publicly available on GitHub, so anyone can explore the project, learn from its implementation, contribute improvements, or create their own modifications.

  • Read it — the engine, the gameplay systems and the world generator, all in one repository
  • Mod it — a native mod API, with worked examples in the tree
  • Play it in your language — English, simple English, Russian and Polish

  Development

The game's code and some of its assets were created with the assistance of AI. The game's concept and gameplay direction were inspired by TerraFirmaCraft.

  The Goal

There is no single path through Primitive. Explore, build, craft, survive, experiment, and make your own story in an endless procedural world.

Start with nothing. Learn the world. Build your civilization.
